Children’s fashion is not a game

The way you dress your children and teenagers may influence their psychological development and put them in risky situations.

The fact of dressing children and teenagers with inappropriate clothes and accessories for their age can influence their psychological development and put them in risky situations, says Mildred Melo Hernandez, psychologist specialized in development.
Melo Hernandez is concerned about girls that wear similar outfits as the ones that wear the most “bizarre” celebrities or the majority of adult women that follow the latest fashions, with high heels and tight clothes.

The consequences

The outfits affect the perception others have of the minor and may put him/her in risky situations. According to the psychologist, the fact for a child of wearing clothes which imitate provocative models used by adults can cause a stimulus that will result in premature sexual awakening of the child or teenager.

Role of the parents

The major responsibility of this guiding process, fall obviously to the parents or the tutors. Therefore, Melo Hernandez notes that parents should clearly point out what they want for their children and what expectations they have of them.
There are fashions that an adult uses but that are simply not considered appropriate for children. In such cases, parents should tell their kids that adults have certain freedoms that minors do not have.
Parents have the responsibility to teach their children how their clothes have an effect to others and that they could even put them in risky situations.
