The success of this initiative confirms the strength of a sector, children’s fashion and childcare, which in Spain reached 1,074 million Euros bill in 2010, according to data provided by ICEX. This represents an increase of 8.59% over the previous year, largely driven by exports.

This is the first time Barcelona will host a children’s clothing trade fair and the city does so in a time when the Spanish brands betting took time to participate in international fairs.
31.2% of sales in this sector are due to sales in foreign markets such as Italy, Portugal and United Arab Emirates, the main recipients of Spanish children’s fashion and childcare.

With the creation of this new fair, many Spanish brands that previously participated in international fairs, have the opportunity to return to show their creations in their own country.

Asepri and the Institution of Biomechanics of Valencia will present on 20th of January during FIMI the results of the first year of the European project Design4Children.

This event is addressed to designers of children fashion, footwear and childcare products to give them innovative knowledge about ergonomics, comfort and ease of use of children products.

Design4Children is an European project launched at the end of 2010 with the objective to improve the competitiveness of the European SME of the children product sector, developing tools of innovative design which promote the improvement of children’s comfort and which expand the useful life of the product.

José Olaso, investigator of IBV and coordinator of Design4Children, will expose the results of the first investigation year of this initiative that has acquired like point of origin the research about the biomechanics conditions of children and like an interaction with the brands and the products designed for them.

A session – named Opportunities of innovation in the fashion design and children’s footwear from the ergonomics, the comfort and the ease of use – will begin at 10 am and will be addressed to the designer of children’s fashion and footwear; the next one, at 4 pm, will be addressed to the designer of childcare products.

At this occasion, there also will be presented e-Child, an European project coordinated by Children’s Fashion Europe, under the Leonardo Da Vinci Programme which aims to create a course of specialization in topics of ergonomics and ease of use for designer of children’s products.

It will be the result of the  cooperation between an international consortium formed by: Nova Child, The Cluster of companies dedicated to the child from France, Ornamo, a Designers Association from Finland, the Bulgarian Association of Apparel and Textile Producers and Exporters, The Swedish telepedagogic Centre and from Spain  Asepri, The Spanish Associations of Children’s Products, IEP – Instituto de Economia Publica and IBV the Biomecanic Institute in Valencia.

The Katie Baby collection includes children’s fashion (sport wear, classic attire), underwear and knitwear.

The project “SAFESURFACE. Children’s Playgrounds: correlation between physicochemical parameters and the high-impact capacity of surfaces. Requirements guide for the business sector”, funded by the Institute for Small and Medium Industry of the Generalitat Valenciana (IMPIVA) within the R & D program, is coming to an end after two years of research on the influence of certain parameters on the shock absorption capacity of synthetic surfaces used on playground floors.

Little Barcelona, which will take place on 5th and 6th of February, is a private initiative taken by three professionals associated with the sector of children’s fashion: Ana Castán, Javier Royo and Silvia Tarrés, respectively dedicated to the representation of brands, the graphical design and children’s accessories.

According to Ana Castán, Little Barcelona was created with the aim to bring together in the Catalan capital the companies of this sector which already meet in international and national fairs, like Playtime in Paris, or Fimi in Valencia.

“A base of brands which are dedicated to the children’s fashion exists in Barcelona, this is a good starting point”, states Castán, who insures that the aim of Little Barcelona isn’t to compete with Fimi, which has become a reference exhibition. Castán insures that the new fair will be aimed at brands with a different profile: smaller size with an “alternative” product.

At the moment, Little Barcelona already has achieved to capture exhibitors like Bean’s Barcelona, Bobo Choses, Monstres or Violeta e Federico, all of these are Spanish. Little Barcelona, which will be held in the headquarters of Foment de les Arts i del Disseny (FAD), in the centre of the city, will have a total capacity of fifty companies, forty of them with stand and ten with corners with smaller space.

For this first edition, Little Barcelona, which has set the aim to attract the visitors and local and foreign brands, will be financed totally by private funds, although its promoters are seeking the involvement of institutions.
